Democratic Battle for Supervisor Focuses on Conflicts and Ethics

The Times Union has published its stock wrap up article on the Democratic battle for the Supervisor's nomination between party endorsed Ron Sinico and his opponent Mary Frances Sabo. You can read it here.

Tonight's Town Board meeting saw the fab five vote unanimously to deny an appeal seeking a copy of an ethics complaint filed by Councilwoman Sabo against building inspector Mike Miner. In addition they declined to release the decision of the Ethics Board regarding that complaint filed at the end of May 2018 as discussed in the Times Union.

Secrecy rules with board members protecting each other. As you read the Times Union's final campaign article you will notice it concludes with this ,"Recently, building inspector Mike Miner’s union, UPSEU, claimed that Sabo may have committed an ethics violation in 2018 by not disclosing that her husband was representing Mulinio in bidding for land at 34 Bugbee Road.  Sabo filed an ethics complaint about Miner developing property in the town while his staff was inspecting it.  Her complaint was apparently filed before Miner successfully bid on the land.  Democrats opposing Sabo have also raised this issue."

The timeline of the ethics complaint and the previously undisclosed effort by the Councilwoman's husband to bid on the land just a week after she filed the complaint against Miner raises serious questions of impropriety. The ethics complaint placed pressure on Miner who was bidding on same land that Sabo's husband was bidding on for a developer. That bid occurred in early June 2018.

Had Miner decided to back away from the land purchase because of fears involving the ethics complaint and its potential affect on his town job, his only competitor for the land purchase might have got the land instead. That competitor was the Councilwoman's husband who was the broker for developer David Mulino. It should be noted that in the April 29, 2019 TU, Councilwoman Sabo stated that "her husband has never been involved in a project since she joined the town board in January 2017". Apparently representing a developer as an agent to purchase land in the town in June of 2018 slipped her mind.

At the board meeting, Councilwoman Sabo denied any knowledge of her husband's bid on that land which was owned by a family friend and which surrounds their home. A quiet dinner table we presume. Nonetheless it appears that the union representing Miner, UPSEU, has raised this issue independently of local democrats. Perhaps they will file an ethics complaint against the Councilwoman? Stay tuned.
