Official Election Results
Less than a month since the election, the Rensselaer County Board of Elections has published its official results. We posted this edition Sunday evening for you early birds!
In North Greenbush, it is clear that Jeff Spain and his band of turncoat “Democrats” who supported the Republican endorsed candidates allowed the GOP to take control of the town. Their support for the Republican candidate for District Attorney also resulted in a slight loss for the eventual winner Richard McNally. That count found Cholakis with 1819 and McNally with 1749, a difference of just 70 votes. That’s close to the core Democratic Caucus vote that the Jeff Spain “Democrats” produced.
On the local side, Josh Sabo, a member of the Democratic Committee was denied the Democratic nomination by the Spain “Democrats” in favor of the GOP endorsed candidate, Mark Evers. Evers received 1121 votes on the Democratic line. Without that line he would have been soundly defeated by his Democratic opponent Josh Sabo who ran with just one line, the Greenbush Party. Evers total vote was 2308 to Sabo’s 1551, a difference of 757.
The same analysis holds true for the Town Council nomination denied to Democrat Josephine Ashworth. Had the Spain Democrats not thrown their support to the Republican nominee Louis Desso, Ashworth would have been an easy winner. In fact, Ashworth would likely have been the top vote getter on the Council.
The results show Desso with 4 lines at 2246, Spain, 3 lines at 1815 and Ashworth with one line, the Greenbush Party at 1363. Desso received 1086 votes on the Democratic line which was denied to Ashworth, a member of the Democratic Committee.
The race for Highway Superintendent was at best embarrassing for Spain and his candidate Mike Carey. First Mark Premo creamed Spain’s man in the Democratic caucus to capture the line. Spain continued to support the GOP candidate even after the caucus yet Carey received a mere 1035 votes to Premo’s 2748, a difference of 1713.
Town Clerk should a 14 year incumbent loosing significant support. Kathryn Connolly received 2068 votes with 3 lines. Her opponent Janice Liberty with 1 line, the Greenbush Party, received 1393 votes, a difference of 675. Had Liberty secured either the Democratic or Republican line, she would likely be town clerk elect. Connolly held on at the Democratic Party, her supposed base, by only 50 votes.
Last the numbers for Receiver of Taxes with “Democrat” Kyran Devery with 3 lines receiving 1994 to Dennis Bonesteel of the Greenbush Party’s 1282, a difference of 712.
Clearly Democrats will be working hard to take their party back from the Republicans who now run it with the help of Democrats like Jeff Spain, Kathryn Connolly, Al Spain and Kyran Devery. What an interesting year is ahead.
