The Morning After

Back when the Democratic endorsement meeting took place for town candidates, the Chairman made it clear that we lose if there is a primary. The numbers last night for Supervisor tell that story. Had there been a united party, the Democratic candidate would have enjoyed the three lines on last night's ballot. They were the Democratic, Green and WFP.

Because of the split in the party, the Democrat lost by 301 votes according to the still unofficial results. The WFP line for Supervisor carried its normal tally of 248 votes and a look at the total votes for the Green line for Receiver of Taxes showed a total of 74 votes tabulated.

If the Democrat had the normal 3 line total, the final count would have been another 322 votes for Supervisor. The result would have been a victory for the Democrat by 21 votes.

Had there not been a primary there is a good chance the Democrat would have added both Supervisor and one Council seat to the town board with Mary Frances Sabo holding the third seat for a Democratic Majority. That was the goal of the Democratic Committee which did not endorse Sabo and asked her to wait and hold her council seat.

Now the town board is about to be a 2-2 tie when Joe Bot vacates his seat in January. The Party will have to do this work all over again next year in a special election.

Elections have consequences.
