The Price of Primaries

When anyone chooses to primary a party endorsed candidate they need to read the tea leaves carefully. In North Greenbush, that means you believe you can win minor party lines as well as the major line you are battling your party for.

Winning the major line is simply not enough in a town where minor party lines are added to your general election total, so if you don't think you can't also win one or two of those minor lines, it's best not to primary for the major line as it's nearly impossible to win a general election with a single major line.

As the dust settles in North Greenbush it appears the insurgent Supervisor candidate on the Democratic line won a battle but may loose the war in November. As it stands she split her party's votes on the Independence, WFP and Green lines allowing the GOP to win the Independence line. The battle also cost the Democrat both the WFP and Green lines. Had she not chose to primary, both the WFP  and Green would have gone to the Democrat giving the candidate 3 lines in November and a real chance to win. But those Democratic votes were split between the candidates and it appears the Green is a 6-6 tie with no one getting the line and that the WFP went to Sinico.

Stay tuned for round two.
